It’s Mardi Gras season and we’ve rolled out the King Cake, slurped down our drive-thru daiquiris, decorated the balcony with purple, green and gold, and stepped out to view the Krewe De Vieux parade! It’s only a matter of time before New Orleans, DWD’s second home, celebrates Mardi Gras. The city will be flooded with nearly 800,000 revelers who flock to the Big Easy to eat, drink and watch the “greatest free show on earth.”
In the spirit of CONSCIOUS DESIGN, we want to share some tips that will help you lighten your carbon footprint and enjoy a GREENER Mardi Gras.
RECYCLE BEADS
Hang onto last year’s beads and use them again. Who needs to know that you didn’t have to bare your bits this time to get them? Throw me somethin’, mistah!
GO NATURAL
Even better, avoid plastic beads. Wear and toss beads that aren’t plastic. Traditional PVC plastic beads release toxins during production are often produced in sweatshops. Wood, glass, seeds, and ceramic are all good, sustainable options.
STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
Forget petroleum-burning transportation: ride a streetcar down St. Charles St. for $1.25.
ORGANIC HURRICANE
Make hurricanes with organic juices and Papagayo Rum, a sweet organic sugarcane rum.

2 oz light rum
2 oz dark rum
2 oz passion fruit juice
1 oz orange juice
½ oz fresh lime juice
1 Tablespoon simple syrup
1 Tablespoon grenadine
Garnish: orange slice and cherry

Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into a Hurricane glass filled with ice. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice.
ARTS
Support local artists by buying paintings from street vendors around Jackson Square. Look for anything from kitchy folk art to portraits of Dynasty-era Linda Evans.
B.Y.O.C.
Bring your own cup to Bourbon street for your take-out daiquiris, and look way more sophisticated than those yokels carrying plastic fleur de lis-shaped cups full of Blue Crack or Hurricanes.
LOCAL GRUB
Just think local and sustainable with all of your food and drinks. Eat crawfish, oysters and other local specialties that haven’t been trucked in from afar.
BIRDS OF A FEATHER
Go ahead and get that purple, green and gold feather boa for Mardi Gras. You can use it again for Halloween or drag parties.
HYDRATE
Bring a refillable water bottle to reduce waste - plastic water bottles require 1.5 million barrels of oil each year to make. We love VOSS water: cool modern design meets sustainability.
GO IN DRAG
What’s a celebration without drag queens? The 45th annual Bourbon Street Awards Show holds the ultimate costume contest - with elaborately costumed drag queens on the corner of St. Ann at 800 Bourbon St.; at noon on Feb. 24th.
NEW ORLEANS HALLOWEEN
Daaahlings, Mardi Gras is for amateurs... the big event of the year in New Orleans is Halloween. And DWD is going to help put the spectacle in spectacular! Dustin has joined the Board of Directors for Halloween in New Orleans as the Marketing Chair. This organization raises money for Project Lazarus, a home in New Orleans for men and women with AIDS. So come to New Orleans and become a Halloween Host, and party your ass off with lots of nearly naked men, for a good cause!
